Through the course of our lives, many of us are very fortunate to rub elbows with the rich and famous. Safe Online Gaming has heard countless stories involving gamblers having the opportunity to sit next to this sports icon or a particular actor, giving the player the experience of a lifetime (if you have ever heard a story like this, the odds are they never shared whether they won or lost. Honestly, does it matter?) Television shows love to glamorize the chance encounters like Jay Pritchett (Ed O'Neil), the patriarch in Modern Family who after spending a little time in Vegas stumbles on a poker game with Billy Dee Williams (the roguish Lando Calrissian in Star Wars). And by the way, no winner was declared in the game if you are wondering. So if you had your chance, what five people would you want to gamble against? The rules are, there are no rules. It can be anyone at any time in history or the present day to make up the ultimate poker table.
No good poker game is played in silence. In the background, and since we are painting our dream poker table, up on the stage is the Gambler himself. Kenny Rogers is belting out the calming yet enticing lyrics of 'The Gambler'. The song is perfect because he is providing excellent advice on knowing when to hold them, fold them, or just walking away (in some cases running!) Of course, the poker game will be played on a Mississippi-style gambling boat traveling slowly down the river.
In the first seat to my left will be John Montagu. John was not famous for coining the phrase, "born with a silver spoon in his mouth", but it could have been attributed to him. He was named the fourth Earl of Sandwich, a highly regarded position of standing in the 1700's in England. The title was given to him when both his father and grandfather died before his eleventh birthday, leaving him with the responsibility of learning the formalities before he could take his position in the House of Lords.
Montagu earned a reputation as a shrewd negotiator, helping to end the Australian War of Succession, ensuring the imprisonment of John Wilkes, and persuading his country to increase its naval forces. Although renowned in government, his love of gambling provided a fate of destitute. It was said that when he started playing poker, he could not stop. Rumor has it that while playing late-night poker he would request his servants to put his roast beef in between two slices of bread so that he could eat with one hand and play uninterrupted. This snack would be bestowed the same name as the Earl, and thus the sandwich was born. Not only would the 4th Earl of Sandwich be great at innovating snacks while playing, he also was known to lose a few hands which would only benefit the other players at the table.
To my right be Sean Connery (my favorite James Bond). James Bond fans might want Daniel Craig or even Pierce Brosnan, but it's my poker table so tonight it will be Sean Connery with a shaken and not stirred martini placed carefully on the table. His presence at the table would elevate the pretentiousness without making it too trite. The game itself would turn into high stakes, and maybe even an opportunity to save the world from evil might present itself.
Directly across the table, with a Cuban Cohiba emitting a ring of white smoke methodically moving through the air, is a man who has 6 NBA Championship Rings. He is the undisputed all-time basketball great (Sorry LeBron fans...he flops too much!). None other than Michael Jordan himself. Not only will Jordan provide some trash talk at the table, but he can also share stories of placing high-stake wagers on the golf course and casino against his fellow NBA stars. Even 17-time poker champ, Phil Hellmuth commented on MJ's reputation as a card shark which would up the ante at the poker table.
To Jordan's left would be James Butler Hickok, better known as "Wild Bill". The table would never fall short of a picturesque description of the American Old West with tales of gunfights, stagecoach robberies, the American Civil War, and his time in Deadwood. Out of respect, we would allow his back to be against the wall, but he would still have to share what he was thinking when had a two-pair poker hand consisting of the black aces and black eights.
To finish out the table, The Duchess of Poker, Annie Duke would occupy the final seat. Holding a World Series of Poker (WSOP) gold bracelet from 2004, and still one of the all-time money leaders in history despite being retired from poker for almost 15 years; the other players would have to make sure their poker face was just right to play their way to the top. A night at this table would allow her to write a sequel to her 2005 best seller, "How I Raised, Folded, Bluffed, Flirted, Cursed, and Won Millions at the Word Series of Poker".
